Phyllis Carol Sowards, 87, of Plainfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 18, 2026.
Carol was born on October 30, 1938, in Paintsville, Kentucky, to the late Roy and Elizabeth (Blair) Sowards. She graduated from Mt. Vernon Academy in 1957 and later graduated from Columbia Union College. Carol devoted more than 50 years of her life to caring for others as a Registered Nurse.
Carol’s life was marked by a deep love for her family and a genuine desire to care for others. Whether through her many years as a nurse or simply in the way she loved those closest to her, caring for people was a significant part of who she was. She was especially proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and the greatest legacy she leaves behind is found in the lives of the family she loved so dearly. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughter, Jodi Phillips (James) of Channahon, Illinois; her son, David Possinger (Glenda) of Clear Spring, Maryland; 8 grandchildren, Zachary Pentoney, Jordi Struble, Mark Phillips, Sheree Lettman, Matt Phillips, Tara Ward, Maggie Possinger, and Seth Possinger; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Elizabeth Sowards; her brother, James Sowards; and her son-in-law, Shawn Pentoney.
A viewing will be held September 26 at Blackburn, Giegerich, Sonntag Funeral Home, 1500 Black Rd, Joliet, IL 60435, the family welcomes visitors from 2-4pm at the Funeral Home.
Burial will be private in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
