Nancy E. Nicol

Age 88

Nancy E. Nicol passed away peacefully on January 18, 2023 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, IL.

Born on January 27, 1934,  Nancy was the loving daughter of William Nicol and Margaret (Findlay) Nicol, and the inseparable companion of her sister Margaret C. (Donald) Smith all of whom preceded her in death.  She was also preceded by aunts and uncles Nan (Joseph) Reed, William Findlay, Alex (Jeannette) Findlay, Jenny (Archie) MacIntyre; cousins William (Beverly) Findlay Jr., Bruce Findlay, Father Wilson Reed, Wray Findlay and Jan (Chuck) DeLuka.

Surviving are her devoted nieces and nephews David (Jean) Smith, Dawn (Larry) Banks, Mark (Karen deceased) Smith and Margaret Ann (David) Schroll as well as 13 great and 11 great-great nieces and nephews, and her favorite cousin Kathryn Findlay.

Nancy attended Joliet Township High School graduating one year early with the class of 1951.  After graduation, while enjoying visitors at her family’s home, Nancy sustained severe burns as a result of a house explosion caused by a natural gas leak thereby enduring many years of pain and suffering.

Beginning her working career at Gerlach Barklow/Rustcraft in Joliet, IL,  Nancy continued her employment at the advertising agency of Foote, Cone and Belding in Chicago, IL finally retiring from the daily commute after 30 long years.    Living in Chicago for a few of those years, Nancy enjoyed all that Chicago had to offer (including her favorite past-time, playing volleyball in the Chicago bar leagues).

After retirement, Nancy and her sister Margaret could be found shopping, laughing uncontrollably or just plain losing their way home on any given day.   Thursdays they could usually be found at Bicentennial Park enjoying the sounds and talents of many, especially the American Legion Band.  If the Joliet Township Loyalty song was ever being played, you could bet they were up and singing right along.   Nancy enjoyed traveling and would regale anyone who would listen with tales of her adventures.  She was also very proud of her pure Scottish heritage and celebrated every holiday with those traditions and her family’s famous shortbread.   If you ever had a question about the Findlay/Nicol family, Nancy was the one to ask.  She could go on forever.  We love you Aunt Nancy and will miss you.
