John Kimmel, 76, of Crest Hill, IL, passed away on April 25, 2023 at home after a hard fought battle with COPD. He was born on January 25, 1947. He is preceded in death by his parents Bob and Hannah (nee Holley) Kimmel. He was the loving husband to Cindy Kimmel for almost 28 years.
John served in the U.S Army in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He was a jack of all trades, and enjoyed woodworking and fishing. He was also an avid Cubs fan. He was proud of his work as a truck driver for Corsetti Structural Steel. He often pointed out all of the buildings he had delivered steel to while driving. A few years after retiring, he became a school bus driver with First Student. He said this was his favorite job he had, and he loved the kids. John was well known by the neighbor children, and always had candy ready whenever he saw them.
Beloved father to 8 children, Beverly “Annie” (Darrell) Thompson, David (Mary) Kimmel, John (Sabrina) Kimmel, Jennifer “Lynn” (David) Garcia, Steven (Chrissy) Kimmel, the late Johnie “JR” Kimmel, Dawn (Wayne) Skinner, Angel Kimmel and his stepson Keith Wisdom. Brother to the late Elsie “Shug” (the late Doug) Copp, Jan “Tooter” (Gary) Whitaker, Waverly “Bill” (Wally) Kimmel, and Robert Kimmel, Jr. Grandfather to 17 grandchildren. He also leaves behind his great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and his grandcats Stealie and Vito.
John will be laid to rest at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery on Tuesday, May 2nd at 1:30 PM, with a procession leaving the Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home at 1:00 PM, all are welcome.
