George P. Troha

“Sonny”

Age 89, late of Joliet, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Joliet and a graduate of Fairmont Grade School, George spent a year and a half at Joliet Catholic High School before attending the Carmelite Seminary in Canada for the next five years where he developed a love of learning.  He then attended St. Joseph’s College in Rensselear, Indiana, where he studied under his great friend and mentor, Fr. Edward Maziarz.  After college, George proudly served in the United States Marine Corps in the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines along side his lifelong Marine buddies better known as “The Herd”.  Upon completion of his service, he attended and graduated from DePaul University College of Law.  George practiced law in Joliet for over 55 years.  In addition to his many Papa George-isms, he passes on his love for Marine Corps hymns, sushi (pronounced sush-shee, according to Papa) and Hilton Head Island to his loved ones.  He was truly one of a kind and will be forever in our hearts and memories as will the smell of cigar smoke forever embedded in our clothes.  So many great memories……

Survived by his loving wife of 58 years Ann (Ugland) Troha and his children, Heidi (Marc) Chignoli and Rolf (Gretchen) Troha.  Proud grandfather and Papa George to: Andrew, Katherine, Christian and Isabella Chignoli, and Madeline (John Santaguida), Lukas, Erik and Ingrid Troha.  One brother Philip (Cecilia) Troha and numerous nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

Preceded in death by parents George and Minnie (Cresto) Troha.  Dearly loved brother Joseph and beloved sister Polly Mondrella (Ray).  Cherished in laws Sverre and Hjordis (Opstad) Ugland.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held, Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus.   Private interment at Woodlawn Memorial Park.    Visitation Saturday morning at the Cathedral of St. Raymond 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass.   In lieu of flowers memorials to Lightways Hospice or Trinity Services, New Lenox.
