Edward M. Loughran, Sr, age 87, of Joliet, Illinois, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025 surrounded by his devoted family. Born on August 2, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois, He was a man of faith, strong principles, and unwavering love for his family. He lived a life marked by devotion to God, service to others, and an enduring desire to see justice for all people. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maureen nee Pershey Loughran his parents Francis J. and Marie, sister Mimi and infant granddaughter Darby Cappel. He is survived by four children, Edward Jr. (Molly), Daniel, Senator Meg (Jason) Loughran-Cappel and Kathleen (Scott) Goin; 14 grandchildren; Kyle Loughran, Jon (Tessa) Loughran, Abby (Yusuf) Haddad, and Cassidy Loughran; Riley (Vince) Alessio, Brennan and Nolan Loughran; Joy, Ezekiel and Benjamin Cappel; Samuel (Taylyn) Goin, Jameson (Kendahl) Goin, Daniel and Guinness Goin; great-grandchildren, Jay, Avery, Carmen, Aurora, William and Elise; siblings Francis Loughran and Kathleen McGrath, dear friend Gerald Whalen and numerous nieces and nephews. Edward began his professional life as a teacher and coach, transitioned to business becoming a plant manager, and in his later years pursued a second career in law, earning his Juris Doctorate from Northern Illinois University. Over the course of his law career, he practiced law with father Francis, his son Edward Jr and nephew Timothy McGrath. He was a member of St Bernard’s, St Rose of Lima, St Patrick’s, St Jude’s churches, and more recently Queen of Apostles church, where he attended Mass regularly and took part in parish life. He found great solace in attending mass, in daily prayer, and in the teachings of the Church. His life was a testament to spiritual devotion, service to others, and deep love for his family and for those seeking to find faith in God. Ed and Maureen’s greatest joy was in raising a loving connected family. Visitation will be at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral home on Wednesday, 4:00 to 8:00 pm and funeral services from the Blackburn-Giegerich-Sontag Funeral Home Thursday May 29 at 9:30 am to Queen of Apostle church for a mass of Christian burial at 10 am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. All are welcome to attend and celebrate his life. Memorial donations may be made to Lightways Hospice or Queen of Apostles church his name. “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.”
