Diane E. Shutts

Diane Shutts was born on May 13, 1949, in Hays, Kansas. She attended school in Hays until 1964, when her family relocated to Pratt, Kansas. Diane graduated from Pratt High School in 1967 and earned her associate’s degree from Pratt Community College in 1969.

She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in education from the University of Kansas in 1971 and her master’s degree in library science from Emporia State University in 1972.

On August 13, 1972, Diane married Robert Shutts at the First United Methodist Church in Pratt, Kansas. In 1974, the couple moved to Joliet, Illinois, where Diane began her professional career as a substitute teacher. She later accepted a position as a reference librarian at Joliet Junior College, a role she held for many years with dedication and pride.

Diane was an active member of Childerguild, where she served both as treasurer and president. During her term as president, she also served as an ex officio member of the board of Silver Cross Hospital. She was an avid reader and dedicated sports fan, particularly college basketball.

Diane is preceded in death by her mother, Muriel Blanche Jones and her father, Thomas W. Jones, II.

Diane is survived by her husband, Robert; her daughters, Sara E. Shutts and her husband, John Fruit, and Cynthia D. Shutts, both of Joliet, grandson David and granddaughter Julia. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas W. Jones III (Debbie); her niece, Heather Jones Morgan; and her nephew, Ryan Jones (Jennifer). Also survived by grandniece Reagan Jones and grandnephew Colton Jones. Finally, she leaves behind her beloved cocker spaniel, Max.

In accordance with Diane’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at Saint Edward & Christ Episcopal Church at 10:00 A.M. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers the family suggests gifts to the JJC Foundation or Childerguild.
