Gelsomino, John P.
Age 82, resident of Joliet since his birth. Married, raised his family, and lived more than 50 years on Burry Street in Joliet. Passed away peacefully at Rock Run Place on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.
Survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marie (nee Czajkowski); four children, Kathy (Scott) Coleman of Shorewood IL, John Jr (Sherry) of Huntersville NC, Gina (Chuck) Schifsky of Rolling Hills Estates CA, and Patty (Ed) Calvillo of St Clair Shores MI. Seven grandchildren: Ryan (Alli), Eric, Abbey, & Megan Coleman; Amanda Schifsky; Sarah, and Julia Gelsomino; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Preceded in death by his Italian immigrant father Vincenzo and mother Josephine, and siblings Joe (Jenny), Josephine (Albert) Libersher, Mary (Jim) Hancock, Tony, Vince (Nina), and infant sister Fena.
A proud U.S. Marine Veteran and Union worker, John was employed by US Steel for 30 years. At age 49, when the Joliet Mill closed, he earned his GED and worked at Holy Family School (Joliet), Ameritech (Plainfield), and United Cerebral Palsy of Will County at the former Raynor Park School (Joliet).
He was a die-hard fan of the Chicago Cubs, regularly catching games on TV; and was happy to Fly-the-W for their World Series win in 2016. Known to throw down a couple winning hands of poker and could dance the night away with his wife.
A parishioner of St Ambrose Church (Crest Hill) for 50+ years, officer of SOAR (retired Steelworkers organization), and a member of Joliet’s Senior Services Center and the Moose Club.
Funeral from the Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home, Saturday May 19, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. to St. Ambrose Catholic Church for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park. Visitation Friday 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
