Welcome to the memorial page for

Gerald "Barney" Craig

July 24, 1927 ~ November 22, 2017 (age 90)

Gerald Oscar ‘Barney’ Craig, age 90 of Joliet, IL passed away peacefully with family at his bedside on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 in Joliet, IL.  Barney (as he was known to everyone) was born in Plainfield, IL to William and Anna (Carlson) Craig on July 24, 1927.  He married Lois V. Bentson at Plattville Lutheran Church in Minooka, IL on November 10, 1951 and together they lived in Joliet, IL for their entire married lifetime together.  Barney was a World War II Navy Veteran, and worked for the EJ&E Railroad in Joliet for 42 years before retiring in 1986.  He was baptized just weeks ago into the Plattville Lutheran Church.

After his retirement, Barney became an avid golfer (something he always wanted to do) – and golfed with his buddy’s multiple times a week when the weather was good for over 25 years.  He also actively worked out at St. Joseph’s Hospital following heart bypass surgery in 1995, and was riding his stationary bike and walking the driveway until a few weeks before his death.  To many in the Joliet area, he was a baseball coach – having coached his two sons through the St. Joe’s Park Baseball Program in the 1960’s, then watching as a proud parent/fan as they played baseball through high school and college.  He watched Chicago’s sports teams; but was a huge Cubs fan, regularly watching over 150 games a year on TV in his retirement years – and living to see the Cubs “finally” win a World Series Championship!  He also enjoyed an occasional trip to the riverboat casinos in Joliet.

Gerald is survived by his two sons, David (Kathy) of Fort Myers, FL and Mark (Kim) of Shorewood, IL; and 2 siblings: Donald (Barbara) of Plainfield, IL and Shirley Koch of Harrison Township, MI. He was also a proud and loving Grandpa, and is survived by 2 grandchildren, Christopher and Hannah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Lois; his parents William and Anna; 3 siblings Richard (Dick), Harold and Roger; and numerous Aunts, Uncles, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

A memorial service will be held for Barney on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 11am, at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home, located on Black Road in Joliet, IL with Pastor Bret Reedy from the Plattville Lutheran Church in Minooka, IL officiating.   Visitation will be prior to the service, beginning at 9am to 11am – at the funeral home.  Burial will take place at Plainfield Township Cemetery immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Plattville Lutheran Church in Minooka, IL in Gerald (Barney) and Lois Craig’s name.
