Dr. Gerald Bersano a lifelong resident of Joliet, passed away on August 28, 2017 at Joliet Area Community Hospice surrounded by his loving family. Born in Joliet on December 26, 1953, Gerald is the son of Bernard and Ann (Chiaramonte) Bersano. He was a member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus. Gerald began his education at Joliet Junior College where he received his AGS degree. He went on to Eastern Illinois University where he received a B.S. Gerald received his first Master’s degree (MHS) from Governor’s State University and his second (MS) from Lewis University. He earned a Doctorate from Loyola University of Chicago. Gerald spent his entire educational career in the Joliet Public School District #86 as a teacher, academic advisor, and principal. After retiring, he became an adjunct professor in the Graduate Educational Program at the University of St. Francis. In addition, Gerald was one of the founding members of the Joliet Grade Schools Foundation for Excellence where he served as past president and on the Board of Directors. He also served on the Lewis University Alumni Board and the Alumni Achievement in Education Committee. Gerald believed in the value of education. The importance he placed on education was evident in his professional philosophy, “My goal has been to advance my education so that I could have a positive impact on children and the field of education.” Everyone who knew Gerald would agree that he succeeded in achieving both lifelong and professional goals. Gerald was a thoughtful and caring person who was always there with guidance and support to those in need. He will be deeply missed. Gerald is survived by his brother Dr. (Ret. Col.) Raymond (Martha) Bersano of Sierra Vista, AZ and sister Mary (John) Henschel of Joliet; Six nieces and Nephews: Eric Bersano, Michael (Lindsay) Bersano, William Bersano, Jon (Lisa) Henschel, Kristin (James) Potthoff and Erik (Kathleen) Henschel. Also survived by dear aunt Sally Schmitz. He was preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Ann Bersano and his grandparents Salvatore and Vincenza Chiaramonte. Gerald’s family would like to thank the staff at Joliet Area Community Hospice for their excellent care and thoughtfulness during this difficult time.

Funeral services for Dr. Gerald Bersano will be held from Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home, 1500 Black Road, Joliet on Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. to the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Joliet. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 3-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Gerald’s name to Joliet Grade Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence District #86, Joliet Area Community Hospice, or the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus. Arrangements entrusted to Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home.
